She’s a far cry from most of the rappers who fall through the doors at VIBE’s headquarters in New York City. On this Wednesday (Apr 1) afternoon, Jamla’s lyrical specialist is here on business. As the world is just catching on to her musical abilities — thanks to a showstopping appearance on Kendrick Lamar‘s “Complexion” — Rapsody is basking in all the newfound accolades.

“When it came out, I hadn’t heard anything from the album,” she explains about listening to her verse on K. Dot’s To Pimp A Butterfly for the first time. Even the contributors on the album had to wait to until release day to hear the final version.

It didn’t matter, though, the impact of Kendrick’s culture-shifting LP has helped to put her career into overdrive. Educated hip-hop circles have been living with her albums for years, but now it’s time for the masses to follow suit.

“In the meantime, we’re going to re-release Beauty & The Beast and its going to have 3 additional songs,” Rapsody tells VIBE about her current plans. She’s working on her next studio album but will give fans a new version of her latest EP next week.
